Battle of Manila Bay, May 1, 1898 

This dramatic rendering signed by Xanthus Smith portrays the Battle of Manila Bay in the Philippines, the first conflict of the Spanish-American War which decimated the Spanish fleet. American warships are to the left, firing on the Spanish vessels at right. Sailors are illustrated in the foreground in the water, clinging to wreckage.
