Steamship City of Rome, Anchor Line
This lithograph advertises the Anchor Line steamship City of Rome, illustrated grandly in New York Harbor. A nearby paddle steamer and steam tug demonstrate the size of this vessel. The City of Rome was built in 1881 for the Inman Line, then transferred to Anchor Line the following year. Though not a competitor for speed records, she is considered one of the most beautiful steamships built. Her classic clipper bow and sail rigging illustrate this transitional period of sail to steam.
