Steamship Iroquois, Clyde Steamship Company
Poster advertising Clyde Steamship Company’s services between New York City, Charleston, South Carolina, and Jacksonville, Florida. The poster features an illustration of the steamship Iroquois, shown underway at sunset, signed by the artist J. O. Davidson. The painting bears striking similarities to one by Antonio Jacobsen, which also portrays the ship in profile with sails up. The ship was built in 1888, the first steel commercial steamship in the US. Her modern design for the period still notably retains auxiliary sail rigging. Sails wouldn’t become completely obsolete in steamships until the turn of the century.
