Steamship Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, North German Lloyd
This large lithograph print features the ocean liner Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, built in 1897 for Norddeutscher Lloyd, or North German Lloyd (NGL). She’s portrayed sailing into New York Harbor, accompanied by several smaller vessels, including a steam tug flying the company flag of two intertwined blue anchors. This ship was among the first four-funnel steamships built, which came to signify speed and power and inspire later vessels, such as the Aquitania seen elsewhere in this collection.
