Steamship Leviathan, United States Lines
Poster for the United States Lines advertising the steamship Leviathan, which was originally built in 1913 as the Hamburg America Line ship Vaterland. The design was signed by the maritime artist Worden Wood. The ship Leviathan was seized upon US entry into WWI as she was in New York at the time and was converted to a troop transport. After the war she was sold to United States Lines and operated as a passenger liner, where she was considered a popular ship in the early 1920’s. Though she wasn’t very profitable, she was nonetheless a symbol of American prestige, frequently billed as the fastest and largest ship in the American Merchant Marine. Those themes appear here in this poster, where the historic sailing vessel Old Ironsides provides a foil to the steamship’s modern lines and size.
