Steamships St. Louis and St. Paul, International Navigation Company

The St. Louis and St. Paul were sister ships, the first American built screw express mail steamers, built for the American Line in 1895 by W. Cramp & Sons in Philadelphia.

The International Navigation Company (INC) was a holding company founded in 1871 by magnate Clement Griscom. The INC formed the Red Star Line in partnership with Antwerp to run a mail service to Philadelphia and New York and acquired the American Line in 1884.  Griscom teamed up with J.P. Morgan in 1899, and the INC became the International Mercantile Marine (IMM). That large company acquired other familiar names such as the Leyland Line, White Star Line, Dominion Line and part of Holland America Line.
