The Vincent M. Love Collection comprises framed lithographs, prints and photographs of maritime subjects, especially passenger ocean liners. Also included are books, promotional ephemera, VHS tapes, and preserved newspapers and clippings document ocean liners and companies, with a special focus on United States Lines, the White Star Line and in particular the sinking of the steamship Titanic in 1912.
Vincent M. Love was an SSHSA member, and a passionate enthusiast and collector of maritime history. Love was born in New Rochelle, New York in 1931. He graduated from Brown University with a major in American Civilization and Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation, he joined the United States Army. These educational experiences lead to his deep interest in transportation and the shipping industry. He worked for several shipping companies over the course of his life, most notably the United States Lines. Love was an avid collector of memorabilia and art related to his interest in maritime history and work in the shipping industry, the Titanic sinking, and the World’s Fair. Collecting information as well as collectibles, he became an expert about the Titanic, and served as a consultant for the first Titanic movies. After retirement he volunteered as a docent at the South Street Seaport Museum, and was a frequent sailor at the Boston Yacht Club and the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. Love died in 2020.
SSHSA is honored to celebrate his legacy and collection. A selection of materials are available for view in this virtual exhibit. Selections of this collection can also be viewed in person at the Ship History Center at 2500 Post Road, Warwick, RI.
